This article presents the results of a study of child support practices carried out by divorced fathers in St. Petersburg. The main research question is how do fathers pay alimony for their children after a divorce ? was formulated after examining quantitative data demonstrating the lack of participation of fathers in the maintenance of children after divorce. In order to understand how men implement the provisions of the child support law in practice, as well as to study their interpretations of (non) participation in the financial support of the child, a qualitative study was conducted, during which 18 interviews with divorced fathers were collected. The study showed that fathers can implement several different child support practices: court- ordered child support , informal regular payments, ad hoc payments, and gifts. In this case, informants do not necessarily choose one method of payment; more often they combine several options, fundamentally distinguishing between different money. To interpret the results, the theory of multiple money by V. Zelizer was used. A look at alimonyhow multiple money made it possible to reveal the different meanings that informants gave to alimony payments. Thus, some practices became part of the process of constructing masculinity after divorce (through maintaining control, freedom to make decisions and dispose of money); the implementation of other practices allowed men to demonstrate the fulfillment of a normative duty. Last but not least, through the payment of alimony , fathers take care of the child, therefore, in this work, the concept of “ethics of care ” by J. Tronto was also applied, the optics of which allows us to analytically separate alimony-as-care and forms of payments that carry other social meanings. Although legally alimonyare paid per child, the recipient is determined by the parent, and in the Russian context, in the vast majority of cases, it is the mother. This state of affairs shifts the issue of alimony payments into the field of financial power, which has a gender dimension, which allows us to take a different look at the motivation of non-payers who use the ideology of “intensive motherhood” as a legitimizing justification for evading payments.
